Give me Jesus - arr. Moses Hogan

Info on the Composer: Click here

My perspective: This song is about priorities..."You can have all this world. Give me Jesus".  Beautifully written, with a more involved piano accompaniment than most spirituals.
La Canzone di Doretta - La Rondine (Puccini)

Opera synopsis: Click here

My perspective: It's hard being a kept woman! She begins by making fun of a poet's love story and ends by getting caught up by the fact that she has no true love in her life.
Dulcissime - Carmina Burana (Orff)

Cantata  synopsis: Click here

My perspective: She's giving it all to him.in less than 60 seconds..."Sweetest one, I give myself to you wholly." Apparently Orff intended a lyric soprano to sing it (not a lyric coloratura) for added "tension".

Rejoice Greatly -Messiah (Handel)

Oratorio synopsis: Click here

My perspective: We are supposed to be celebrating the love and mercy of Jesus! (Zecharaiah 9: 9-10) Handel keeps the soprano busy with lots of florid passages, which is why the soprano sometimes doesn't look like she's rejoicing. A classic oratorio piece for coloraturas.
Accompanied by Gail Hintz, piano
